Happily Discontented Man

from Army of Dreamers (2003, album) by Paul Sprawl

/

about

A sort of sequel to Happily Discontented, (Dirt Roads) this song addressed a personal social situation of mine in 2003. In particular it confronted my girlfriend's dad and his attitude about my career, which amounted to the stereo-typical "get a real job" type of thinking.

lyrics

1.
Old man told me
Keep in choppin' that wood
Swing that axe son
Swing it good
You can stoke the fire
With that wood

2.
My girlfriend's daddy
he's got a little bit of trouble with me
He says I'm a dreamer
He says I got cockamamie schemes
Just one thing I wanna tell him
It never bothered me

3.
He drives a Lexus
I got a beat-up old van
He owns two houses
I'm just doin' the best I can
Well, I'm a happily discontented man

repeat 1.
Old man told me
Keep in choppin' that wood
Swing that axe now
Swing it good
You can stoke the fire
With that wood
